The MINI Cooper Convertible is offered in three different versions: Cooper Convertible, Cooper Convertible S and Cooper Convertible John Cooper Works. Powertrains are one key difference between the three models. MINI Cooper Convertible models are powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine making 121 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, while the MINI Cooper Convertible S gets a turbocharged version of the same engine, making 181 hp and 177 pound-feet--or 192 lb-ft for a few seconds at a time in overboost mode. At the top of the lineup, the John Cooper Works model gets a higher-output version of the turbo engine that makes 208 hp and 192 lb-ft (or 207 lb-ft in overboost). All three of the versions include a quick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a 6-speed automatic transmission is optional for these front-wheel-drive cars. With a Sport mode and steering-wheel paddle-shifters, the automatic transmission allows more driver control when it's needed for hilly terrain, curvy roads or passing maneuvers. The Cooper Convertible lineup has underpinnings that help deliver the easy maneuverability that this very compact design suggests, while also offers very sporty performance--'go-kart handling' is the term used by MINI. With a MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear setup, plus electric-assist power steering (made firmer through the Sport mode button) and kept controllable by the electronic stability control system (with anti-lock brakes and Brake Assist). Dynamic Traction Control system is available and includes an electronic differential lock for better handling and traction near the limit. The MINI Cooper Convertible lineup is different from the Hardtop and other models from the brand in that it offers a tight-fitting, electrohydraulic-powered soft top. It can be opened or closed in just 15 seconds, at speeds of up to 18 mph, and includes a sliding-roof function. There's also an "Openometer" for the instrument cluster--an analog gauge that keeps track of how long the car's been driven with the top down. Inside, the Cooper Convertible has a 50/50-split rear seat that can fold forward for more cargo space. With the rear seats down and the roof closed, it can be expanded out to 23.3 cubic feet. The Cooper Convertible's cargo door opens from the top and is hinged from the bottom, allowing easy loading and better packaging with the soft-top arrangement. Cooper Convertibles that are optioned with the automatic climate control system also have a special top-down mode. Standard equipment on the Cooper Convertible includes leatherette upholstery with height-adjustable front bucket seats, tilt/telescopic steering, power windows, keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning, map lights, a trip computer, and much more. Convertible S models add fog lamps, xenon headlamps, and sport seats, plus various other upgrades to handle the added power like larger front brake rotors. John Cooper Works models get larger brakes yet, plus an aero body kit and sporty cloth upholstery. The range of options on the MINI Cooper Convertible lineup is vast, with several significant packages lumping together popular features, and then dozens of standalone options from which to choose. Some of the most noteworthy option packages include the MINI Connected Package, which includes voice command, a USB/iPod adapter, a center armrest, and full smartphone integration. Add the Navigation Package and it includes real-time traffic information as well. Separately, a Cold Weather Package adds power-folding mirrors, heated mirrors and washer jets and heated front seats. The base audio system in the MINI Cooper Convertible has a CD player and auxiliary input, as well as six speakers, while the MINI Connected systems offer a 6.5-inch screen with Bluetooth and USB port--as well as optional navigation. These systems can display album artwork or calendar entries and function with BMW apps for streaming music and other tasks. Wheels and wheel styles on the MINI Cooper Convertible lineup are wide and varied, including standard 16-inch Twin Spoke alloys, 16-inch Rib Spoke alloys on the Cooper S Convertible and 17-inch Cross Spoke Challenge alloys on the JCW. Various optional wheel styles include 16- and 17-inch Circular Spoke, Twin Spoke and Conical Spoke wheels, in several finishes. There are also plenty of other paint, striping, accessory and personalization options.
